Year 1 Summer Term Curriculum Letter
Welcome back to the last term of the school year. We hope this will be a time of
enjoyment and continued effective learning for all the children. During the summer term (11 weeks), the following aspects of the curriculum will be covered:
English
Literacy - Reading
Continue to use a mixture of the ‘look and say’ method (flashcards and sight
vocabulary), and phonic blending.
More emphasis on discussion of stories and what your child thinks will happen
next in the story. Talk about the characters, the ‘lesson’ of the story and what
character we like most.
Guided reading where the children read the same book under the guidance of
the teacher. This will continue to follow a regular timetable. There are currently five reading groups, with three adults reading with them every day; so each child reads at least twice a week.
Individual reading practice is encouraged at home to prepare for Guided reading.
A wide range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and rhyme texts will be used.
Literacy - Writing
Free expressive ‘writing’ such as writing in a diary.
Correct formation of letters (lower case and upper case) and numbers with
correct pencil grip and posture.
The use of capital letters, full stops and spaces between words.
Continued hand writing practice and more emphasis on ‘cursive script’ in
preparation for joined writing.
Start introducing tenses: using the past tense.
Spelling and phonics work. Every week a set of spelling words will learnt for a
spelling test. Spelling will emphasize the high frequency words, but also other
words as appropriate. Children will continue to study the Letters and Sounds system, moving into Phase 5 this term. Each week they will study one phoneme and the words that can be made with it.
Literacy - Speaking and listening:
Audience awareness and concentration span (the ability to concentrate and
listen attentively) will continued to be encouraged.
Confidence in speaking is continually nurtured with speaking in languages other
than English not allowed in the classroom. Listening skills are developed in the children throughout the year.
Maths
The children will continue to work in differentiated maths groups, following the National Numeracy Strategy of Britain. They will continue to study a broad and balanced mathematical curriculum which will teach them good number sense, understanding of shape and space, how to organise data and other mathematical skills. These include:
Counting to 100, backwards and forwards.
Addition and subtraction within 20 and beyond.
Mental maths: counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. Understanding more and less;
take away, add and vocabulary of addition and subtraction.
More emphasis on problem solving in Maths and linking language to Maths.
Recognition, value and formation of numbers 0-20 and beyond.
Simple money (recognizing coins, adding coins, giving change and practice paying
and buying things).
Simple measurement including capacity.
Time, hour, half hour and quarters.
At this point in Year 1 the children have been introduced to all aspects of Year 1 maths. Their remaining time will help them to expand their understanding and improve their ability.
Science
Children will continue to study Science once a week, with regular homework given, and scientific activities and thinking integrated into other subjects.
· The first topic will be Pushes and Pulls. The children will learn about forces, how things can be pushed or pulled, what happens to thing that are pushed or pulled. They learn about how force can be applied, are introduced to leverage and forces in everyday life. They will learn about the issues of danger and safety in pushing and pulling, and be introduced to the force of gravity, and the scientific laws of action and reaction.
· The second topic will be Sound and Hearing: the children will learn about the phenomenon of sound, direction of sound, issues of sound and safety. They will learn how to predict, experiment, record and test ideas about sound, and how sound travels through different materials, and how sound changes over distance. They will learn about sound in everyday life, in the animal world, and our own experiences of sound and hearing.
Information and Computers Technology
This term will concentrate on developing simple word processing skills and to use
ICT as an integrated medium to enhance the teaching of English, Maths and
Science. The children will continue to use selected websites, including www.tris1.weebly.com, www.tianjinrego.com, and www.mrkohll.weebly.com to enrich and enhance their experience of education, and to learn about the uses and controlling of computers.
Art and Design
Art is used as a cross curricular link in many subjects. Different media, colour,
materials and techniques are used. This term the children will study sculptures. This will include the work of famous sculpture artists, studying sculptures in different materials such as stone, ice, metal and so on, and creating and discussing own sculptures in a variety of materials.
History:
The children will learn about the history of holidays, in the second half of summer term, a topic that will connect to the summer holidays approaching.
Geography:
The children will learn about a foreign country – Britain – in the first half of summer term. They will learn about distances, characteristics of areas, human and natural geographical features, and how to compare them in different countries. This will hopefully connect to our relationship with a Year 1 class in England and, through these and the connections of teachers to Britain, will help the children in their expanding knowledge of the world.
Personal, Social and Health Education:
The children will continue to study PSHE both as an “invisible subject” – since the issues of personal, social and health education are connected to many of the activities in class – and as a discrete lesson. As an “invisible subject” there is an emphasis on teaching children how to be friendly, how to share, how to be polite and helpful; how to eat healthily, the importance of fresh air and exercise, and how to task care of our teeth; and how to make ourselves happy and live rewarding lives. As a discrete lesson, the children will have one lesson each week. This term, our two topics are:
(1) Living in a diverse world. This will help the children to explore the idea of diversity; the idea that we are all different, and that our different strengths should be celebrated and used to help each other and enrich our lives. This topic will be linked to Geography, learning about another country.
(2) Choices: the children will learn about the importance of choices, with especial regards to life decisions, health and happiness. They will practice researching, making and evaluating choices, and learn about the importance of making good choices and learning from mistakes.
SPECIALIST LESSONS

Knowledge and understanding of fitness and health
During Key stage 1 pupils build on their enthusiasm for movement, using it to explore and learn about their world. They start to work and play with other pupils in pairs and small groups.
By watching, listening and experimenting they develop their skills in movement and coordination, and enjoy expressing and testing themselves in a variety of situations.
Focus this term:
· Continuing the development of hand eye coordination through team games and individual skills for activities, such as Athletics running and field events, and summer games.
· Increasing the use and development of team work skills, and confidence in working with others in a cooperative manner, through speaking as well as action.
· Increasing focus on competitive skills in both team activities and individual activities within class and also through swimming gala and sports day.
· Encouragement in reducing swim aid equipment, where relevant, with increasing confidence and progression in their skill development of basic swimming strokes and water based skills, such as floating and submerging.

Chinese (with Miss Helen Bai, Tuesday 1.00 – 2.10 and Wednesday 1.00 – 1.35):
In the third term Year 1 students will keep trying to spell and read the Pinyins with more accuracy and keep practicing basic strokes in order to form the characters with the correct order. Students will also focus on recognizing and writing more characters with a higher standard. The main target in this term will still be writing high quality characters.

Please remember to return the book each week. The children are allowed to choose their own books, and may choose a book that they enjoy even if the level is a little difficult or easy for them. However, they are not expected to read library books independently and the books should be an opportunity for parents and children to share and enjoy together. It is important that children learn to love reading, and this will help them to do so.
Homework:
· Every evening, children will have spelling work to do and reading books to practice. Please read them together.
· A mathematics worksheet and/or task will be sent home twice a week.
· A science worksheet or task will be sent home once a week (although this term there may be some alterations to this routine, which will be compensated for).
· A wide selection of educational games are made available to the children through the year 1 website (www.tris1.weebly.com) and www.mrkohll.weebly.com. Parents will receive information on the best ways these can be used at home by the children to practice and learn and make educational progress.
